About Manchester Metros

Manchester Metros are the Ice Hockey club for all universities in the North West of England, going strong since 2001.

We welcome members from the University of Manchester, MMU, Salford, UCLan, Lancaster, Bolton and all other Universities and colleges in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Staffordshire, Cheshire and North Wales.

We have several ice hockey squads, covering both checking and non-checking hockey, and can cater for the full range of abilities, from junior internationals and league players to absolute beginners.

Club History

The Metros were formed as a roller hockey team in 2001 by a group of students studying at UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester (commonly known as Manchester University until 2004). They first competed in the University roller hockey national championships in the 2002-2003 academic year, finishing 4th overall.

In 2004 the club had their debut as an ice hockey team in the BUIHA cup competition. In the first few years the team were nomadic, lacking a home rink. Games were played at Sheffield (both Queens Road and IceSheffield), and then Bradford, before the new rink in Altrincham was completed. With a regular training slot close to Manchester, a B team was introduced in 2008, and 2011 saw the entry of a C team into the 3rd tier National Championships weekend.

In 2012 there was further expansion of the club, with a large intake of beginners. The club were able to enter a team into all three divisions of the BUIHA cup competition, and also enter a D team into the Tier III Nationals weekend.
